Digholipukhuri

Dighali Pukhuri, a man-made lake in the centre of Guwahati City, is encircled by a road that connects to the city's many locations. The Assam State Museum lies south of the pond, and the Gauhati High Court is to the north. The Handique Girls' College's dorms and college are well complemented by the pond, which is beautifully situated in the middle of the area. It is a significant Guwahati tourism destination.

History

Dighol, which means long, and Pukhuri, which means lake, are the two Assamese terms that form the name Dighalipukhuri.

The lake's length is thus made abundantly obvious by the name.

Legends describe the lake's origins and the reasons behind them. However, the inhabitants' favourite legend has it that during the reign of King Bhagadatta of Pragjyotishpura, a canal was dug from the Brahmaputra River.

The celebration of his daughter Bhanumati's marriage to Kaurava ruler Duyodhana was the impetus behind the excavation of this lengthy lake. The Mahabharata is thought to have made reference to this incident. The Ahoms are supposed to have utilised the lake as a naval yard once it formed.

Structure of Digholi Pukhuri

Dighalipukhuri's physical characteristics are as implied by its name: it is a lengthy artificial lake. The lake is rectangular in shape and is said to be roughly half a mile long. As is well known, the lake was carved from the powerful Brahmaputra River and progressively drifted away from it over time. The lake, which has been there from the beginning of time, served as a landmark for many newly established workplaces, organisations, and educational institutions.

Since the dawn of time, Dighalipukhuri has been a popular tourist destination. Due to the numerous recreational activities that occur here and the excitement that people experience when visiting this magnificent lake, it is one of the top tourist destinations.
Sitting next to the lake, the cool wind and the water's picturesque splendour made it a wonderful area to hang out for families and couples alike. Additionally, there is a park within the lake complex where kids can go to play and enjoy themselves.
Activities
The Dighalipukhuri also takes pride in events like rowing competitions. The Dighalipukhuri was initially the most popular swimming location because the swimming training facility was located in the lake itself. The lake is now solely used for boating and rowing after swimming was later made illegal there.
How to reach
Being in the middle of the city, Dighalipukhuri is simple to get to.
The lake may be reached on foot from Latasil Playground Bus Stop, which is the closest bus stop. Aside from that, an auto rickshaw is another option for getting to Dighalipukhuri.
When visiting Guwahati, one must undoubtedly have a look at the lake, especially at night when the lights are turned on and the lake has an absolutely stunning appearance.
